Shamsuddeen Hassan Muhammad Bio.
Dr. Shamsuddeen Hassan Muhamamd is a Google DeepMind Academic Fellow and an Advanced Research Fellow at Imperial College London. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Porto, Portugal. Prior to that, he earned an MS in Computer Science from the University of Manchester, UK, and a BSc in Computer Science from Bayero University, Kano, Nigeria. His research interests lie in Natural Language Processing (NLP), with a particular focus on low-resource African languages, computational linguistics for underserved communities, and multilingual representation learning. He has published in top-tier venues including ACL, EMNLP, NAACL, ICLR, and NeurIPS. His work has received several best paper awards and widespread recognition.
He actively contributes to the research community in various capacities, including serving as Area Chair for ACL, NAACL, and EMNLP. He is also a faculty member at the Faculty of Computing, Bayero University, Kano, Nigeria; a Visiting Lecturer at the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences in Cameroon and South Africa; and a Visiting Lecturer at York St John University.
Dr. Shamsuddeen co-founded the HausaNLP research group, which advances NLP research and tools for the Hausa language, one of the most widely spoken languages in Africa. He also founded the Arewa Data Science Academy, which aims to democratize AI and data science education by providing free training in machine learning and data science to underserved students and communities across Nigeria and beyond.
His work has been highlighted in both academic and public forums, such as Science, Label Studio, as he continues to advocate for inclusive AI research across Africa and the Global South.
